Why is it important to use a cleanser?

Using a cleanser helps the skin to be clean and healthy. It is recommended to use a facial cleanser twice a day, in the morning and before going to bed. This step in your skincare routine is essential to prevent clogged pores, inflammation, dryness and impurities. Indeed, the skin on the face can accumulate dirt and oil coming from air pollution or from natural oils product by the skin. This can build up and quickly lead to irritation and various skin problems.

Step 1: Find the cleanser that match your skin

There are a lot of different cleansers, and it may become a hard task to find the one that matches your skin needs. Certain products will be better suited than others depending on your skin types. Whether you have sensitive skin or oily skin, cleanser composition will vary. The cleanser you will use needs to benefit your skin and help maintain its balance.

What are the 5 types of cleanser?

Oil cleansers are designed for different skin types including sensitive skin and oily skin. Indeed, thanks to its composition, oil cleansers are effective to break down oil-based impurities such as sebum, makeup and sunscreen. They are particularly suitable for persistent makeup such as waterproof ones. Oil cleansers soothe the skin and preserve its natural pH. The oily to milky texture glides on the skin without leaving a greasy film.

Cream cleansers are designed for dry or sensitive skin as they offer a gentle cleansing. Thanks to moisturizing ingredients, it improves hydration and leaves the skin comfortable. With its creamy foam texture, it is very effective in removing dirt and makeup while maintaining the moisture of the skin.

Clay cleansers are designed to remove only dirt and impurities from the pores while keeping the skin well balanced. Especially designed for oily or combination skins, clay cleansers are effective in cleaning breakouts, soothing redness and preventing clogged pores without causing excessive dryness. They often contain ingredients like kaolin or bentonite clay, known for their absorbent properties.

Suitable for most skin types but especially combination or oily skin, gel cleansers are designed to remove impurities and excess oil without leaving residue. They usually contain ingredients to hydrate the skin while cleaning like glycerin and hyaluronic acid.

What is micellar water?  Suitable for sensitive skin, micellar water is a gentle, no-rinse and quick cleaning option. It is particularly effective to remove makeup, dirt and impurities without needing to rub. The ingredients contain micelles which are tiny oil molecules suspended in soft water.

How to use the right cleanser for my skin?

Depending on your skin type and your desired results you will have to find the right cleanser for your skin.

  • For dry skin, prone to irritations, choose a gentle cleanser and follow each face wash with a moisturizer to protect your skin.

  • For hyperpigmented skin, choose a cleanser containing ingredients known for their skin-brightening properties. Ingredients like glycolic acid, salicylic acid or vitamin C are good to reduce the appearance of dark spots and gently exfoliate the skin.

  • For combination to oily skin, choose a cleanser with Salicylic acid that deep cleans your pores without irritating.

  • For normal to sensitive skin, a jelly cleanser will help boost your skin’s brightness.

  • For very dry and sensitive skin, choose a hydrating cleanser to clean your pores without irritating and depleting the skin’s natural moisture.

Step 2: Use the chosen cleanser correctly

Now that you know which cleanser to choose, learn how to use it to enjoy all its benefits. Follow our step-by-step guide to understand how to use your cleanser.

If you have long hair, tie it so it is out of your face while cleansing. Also, when the hair is tied, it is easier to clean the pores on the hairline.

Before touching your face, wash your hands with soap and warm water to make sure that no bacteria or dirt are present and will transfer to your face.

Wet your face with lukewarm water and not hot water which is too harsh for the skin of your face. This step will help the cleanser to run smoothly on your wet skin.

Apply a small amount of cleanser to your hands and use gentle circular motions to massage it evenly into your face. Be meticulous not to put any cleanser in your eyes or mouth but to focus instead on the chin, the cheeks, the bridge of your nose and your forehead. Be gentle and don’t scrub the skin as it can lead to irritation or drying out.

Rinse your face with lukewarm water once you have properly covered all the largest areas of your face with the cleanser.

When the cleanser is washed from the face, dry your face off with a soft towel.

Step 3: Continue your skincare routine

Once your cleansing routine is done, keep on with your usual skincare routine depending on your skin type.

Depending on your skin type and your use of makeup or sunscreen during the day, you can choose double cleansing, which means washing the face twice in a row to have it cleaner and healthier

Always remember to moisturize after cleansing your face to help prevent dry skin. Moisturizing is an important part of a skincare routine, and it helps lock in hydration

Limit washing your face to twice a day, once in the morning and once at night or after sweating heavily. Indeed, perspiration irritates the skin, so it is a good practice to clean it after sweating to prevent irritation. Remember that overcleaning may do more harm than good to the skin and can cause sebum overproduction leading to more blemishes. That’s why you need to be careful when washing your face.
